The vast majority of the 80 tons CO2 equivalent is due to international flights, as many of you guessed.
Look at the rough breakdown we produced below ⬇️
This is based on the 2021 conference which was going to happen in Hull but moved online due to covid19. View post on X
Time to wrap up my #GreenBAAS 🌱 takeover folks!
How much CO2 equivalent does a BAAS conference represent?
That’s 80 tons.
Roughly the equivalent of growing 3,200 trees to maturity!
We obviously can’t do that so moving online every 3 years is the right thing to do. View post on X

@E_Devienne @RebeccaTillett1 @ASEH_org @esehtweets @theAAG @SLAS_Org @MESA_1966 @asleuki What else should professional academic societies do to contribute to collective climate action?
We have ideas. Read our statement here: https://baas.ac.uk/community/green-baas/
@E_Devienne @RebeccaTillett1 3⃣ we’ve drafted a Climate Action Plan with bold ambitions and recommandations for the future.
What other academic org. are leading on these questions?
There’s @ASEH_org @esehtweets @theAAG @SLAS_Org @MESA_1966 @asleuki
@E_Devienne @RebeccaTillett1 What have we achieved so far?
1⃣we’ve pushed for BAAS to commit to hold 1 every 3 annual conferences online ➡️ fewer flights ✈️ = less carbon
2⃣we worked with Mark McLay, our treasurer, to defund from Barclays, one of many banks that fund fossil fuels projects
GREEN BAAS has a steering committee and a mailing list. Do join one of the other by contacting @E_Devienne and/or @RebeccaTillett1
GREEN BAAS is the envtal & sustainability network of the British Association for American Studies. It was founded in 2019 to respond to increasing concerns about the envt and the US’ relationship to climate change, and to consider + direct the changes that BAAS can make

Second, I should probably introduce GREEN BAAS and what the two co-leads, @E_Devienne and @RebeccaTillett1, do. Unroll for the full explanation 🧵
