UG Essay for Scholars of Colour

The 2021 awards will open for submissions on 1 October 2020.

In order to tackle the significant obstacles in higher education that are caused by systemic racism, and to make clear not only the commitment of BAAS to making the study of America in the UK more inclusive, but also to demonstrate the fundamentally important place scholars of colour have, BAAS is happy to launch this essay prize which is open exclusively to Black, Indigenous, Asian, Latinx, Arab, and any other BIPOC students. We are looking for essays that explore any aspect of the American experience, from the perspective of history, literature, film, politics or any other related or inter-related discipline.

Essays may be adapted from coursework or ongoing research projects that students are engaged in, but they must conform to word length and the appropriate presentation style required by the judging panel for each award.

For the undergraduate essay prize, we request that no more than 10 essays per undergraduate department or programme should be submitted, each with a signed note by the Head of Department or tutor certifying the applicant’s registered status.

Undergraduate Scholars of Colour are more than welcome to submit work for this award and the Undergraduate Essay Prize (more details here), but these submissions cannot be duplicated: different essays have to be submitted to each award category.

The prize for the winning author will be £500.

The essay must not exceed 2,500 words in length (excluding footnotes and bibliography).

Authors should use an appropriate bibliographic referencing system.

Peter Boyle MA Graduate Teaching Assistantship – University of Wyoming

[vc_row margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”0″ bg_type=”no_bg”][vc_column][dt_gap height=”20″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The MA Graduate Teaching Assistantship, starting in September 2021, will provide income for two years and a MA fee waiver.

 

Applications are invited for the BAAS Graduate Assistantship in American Studies at the University of Wyoming, starting in August 2021 for two years. Candidates will normally be final-year undergraduates in American Studies and related fields and disciplines at a British university, but applications will also be accepted from recent graduates.

A BAAS Graduate Assistantship is awarded for two years of graduate study, assuming satisfactory progress toward the MA degree and adequate performance of GA duties.  During the two years the GA could expect to assist in the teaching of two courses (leading discussions, marking essay exams, etc.), conduct research in support of a faculty member’s project, and participate in grant-supported activities that would lead outside the university.  The GA could demand between 15-18 hours of work per week.  The Assistantship provides an income sufficient to cover living expenses, plus remission of tuition fees while the recipient of the award pursues graduate study for an MA.

Applicants will be received by a BAAS panel, which will draw up a shortlist for an interview in December-January.

BAAS is committed to promoting best practice in matters of equality and diversity, and will be attentive to issues of equality and diversity when judging applications.

The recommendation of the panel needs to be ratified by the University of Wyoming through their internal application process. This will be simplified for the BAAS awardee (with only a statement of purpose and a writing sample needed), but it does involve a $50 fee to the University. The successful candidates would begin their studies at the University of Wyoming in August 2021 for the two years, 2021-23

Summary of Role

The British Association for American Studies (BAAS) is seeking a Conference Manager to oversee the planning and running of its 66th Annual Convention — its first to be hosted entirely remotely — which will be held online on 6-11 April 2021.

 

The Conference Manager will be responsible for the successful preparation for, and running of, the digital conference in accordance with BAAS’s twin principles of accessibility and sustainability.

 

The decision to host a virtual conference pre-dates the Covid pandemic. As part of the ‘Green BAAS’ agenda, we are committed to reflecting upon the environmental impact of our activities, and to making positive changes to combat climate catastrophe. A digital conference presents the opportunity not only to minimise international travel, but also to highlight the work of members working in the environmental humanities, and to reflect critically upon the culture of academic conferences.

 

Furthermore, we hope that the reduced costs associated with a virtual event will facilitate the participation of American Studies students and scholars across the globe, and will help generate new and productive networks and collaborations.

 

Applications for this position are particularly encouraged from under-represented groups in UK higher education, as part of BAAS’ active commitment to class, regional, racial, ethnic, gender and sexual diversity.

 

Duties will involve:

  • Researching digital events platforms and liaising with providers to build an accessible, user-friendly, and cost-effective conference platform
  • Leading a steering committee to building a schedule of sessions and exploring appropriate session formats
  • Populating and maintaining the chosen conference platform, including uploading asynchronous materials, moderating discussion boards, scheduling sessions
  • Providing technical support and guidance for speakers/contributors before and during the conference
  • Compiling and disseminating publicity materials using appropriate channels
  • Managing delegate registration and fielding associated queries
  • Communicating with advertisers
  • Managing the conference’s social media strategy up to and during the event
  • Collecting and compiling delegate feedback (and basic analysis of user statistics) following the conference

 

We conceive this role as an ideal position for an Early Career Researcher or postdoctoral member of the BAAS community aiming to gain valuable transferable organisational experience.

 

Location

This role is a remote role and there are no citizenship or location requirements. The expectation is that the position will involve UK working hours.

 

Hours Pro Rata

0.1 role (rising to 0.5 late March to early April 2021)

 

Salary

£6,000 (for an estimated 200 hours work between November 2020 and May 2021), paid monthly pro rata.
