The UCL Institute of the Americas is seeking to fill an Lecturer (Teaching) position in US History. The position is fixed-term for 1 year (with a start date of 1st September 2026) to cover the teaching of a member of academic staff. The role holder will carry out teaching and administration within the Institute of the Americas in the area of US history.
The postholder will carry out teaching and administration within the UCL Institute of the Americas, with a particular focus on the history of the United States. We especially welcome applicants whose research and teaching interests complement our existing provision, offering an exciting opportunity to contribute to a diverse research culture.
The postholder will convene AMER0046: Protest Politics in the United States, an undergraduate module taught across Term 1 and Term 2 (two cohorts of 25 students), alongside a further Level 5 option running in Term 2 (either AMER0055: Intimate Matters: History of Sexuality in the United States or AMER0095: The United States of Empire: Place and Power in US Foreign Relations). At postgraduate level, they will convene a 15-credit Level 7 option running in Term 1 (either AMER0043: Challenging the Straight State: Regulation, Repression, and Resistance in US Sexual Politics; AMER0010: Politics of US Foreign Policy; AMER0106: Freedom Bound: Ideas of Cold War Foreign Policy; or AMER0092: The United States at War: Decolonial Perspectives).
The postholder may also contribute occasional sessions to team-taught modules, including AMER0038: Encountering the Americas, AMER0050: The Making of Modern America, AMER0053: Investigating the Americas, and AMER0057: Researching the Americas, as appropriate, and will support undergraduate and postgraduate dissertation supervision where needed.
Administrative responsibilities may include advising students on year abroad options, advanced writing mentoring, and personal tutoring
The salary is £54,931-£64,644 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. We will consider applications to work on a part-time, flexible and job share basis wherever possible.
