This issue will incorporate two thematic concerns. Firstly, how Chinese American writers weave individual and family immigration into public histories of the U.S. and China, forming part of the Chinese American diaspora while maintaining their own voices and stylistic distinctiveness. Secondly, how Chinese American writers experiment with various literature forms and traditions when they write about war, exile, nostalgia, and assimilation, as well as other topics beyond immigration such as activism, queerness, ecology, philosophy, and art. These two focuses, which might be summarised as hybridity and memory, reflect the possible clash and merge of past and present, West and East, commemoration and silence, as well as tradition and innovation.
While we welcome essays addressing our two main topics, we will also be happy to see other work that engages with Chinese American writing. Submissions that explore intersections, push boundaries, or offer innovative perspectives on Chinese American writing are especially encouraged. The scope remains intentionally broad to reflect the richness and diversity of research about the literature of the Chinese American diaspora, Chinese American representation in literature, representations of Chinese and China in American literature, and newness in Chinese American literature. In addition, we invite English-language creative works, including poetry, prose, and short fiction, by Chinese American writers or works inspired by Chinese history and culture.

The deadline for full submissions (max. 7000 words), after an abstract is accepted, is March 1, 2026.
