Tech Bros, Proud Boys and Christian Dads: Masculinity and MAGA Politics

events

A key feature of Donald Trump’s second administration is its relationship to very particular forms of masculinity. Trump 2.0’s political agenda is actively pursuing the reassertion of defiantly ‘traditional’ and patriarchal conceptions of the family, gender and sex. This political agenda seems to be underpinned by a political culture that – despite a high number of women in the Cabinet – is very ‘male’. But the currents of American masculinity, Evangelical Christianity, and white nationalism that make up Trump’s ideological coalition weren’t invented in the MAGA era. How have we got here, and what does it tell us about American political culture?

This event is part of ‘America Now! Conversations in the Contemporary USA’, a collaborate series of events on US politics, society and culture co-organised by the Eccles Institute at the British Library and BAAS.
