‘African Atlantic Lives and Visual Culture’ is a new network that seeks to build research community, foster dialogue and advance knowledge of visual cultures of and in the African Atlantic. AALVC’s interdisciplinary focus on visual culture brings together participants from film and screen studies, art history, print culture, and stage and performance studies backgrounds, and will also target museum and gallery involvement. The term ‘African Atlantic’ is intended to encompass both African America and wider Black and African diasporas, opening up research conversations spanning multiple experiences and regions (in the Americas, Europe, Africa) linked to the history of the transatlantic slave trade. Researchers at all career stages, including postgraduates, are invited to be in touch if they are interested in joining the network.
A varied programme of online and in person events is planned, aided by the support of the BAAS Development Fund. We have an online Work in Progress forum coming up on Monday 19th May and encourage you to become a member ahead of that!
