Calling all humanities, American Studies, and videogames scholars!
Dr Kate Spowage (University of Leeds) and I are co-editing a special issue of the Open Library of the Humanities Journal (OLHJ) called ‘Gaming and the Humanities: Interdisciplinary Essays on The Last of Us (2013-)’. The focus is on Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us franchise, and we’re seeking a wide range of humanities-based contributions to explore the franchise from diverse perspectives. We have a broad definition of ‘humanities’ – philosophers, historians, sociologists, ecocritics and more are all welcome! Taking The Last of Us as a shared case study, we aim to ask, in broad terms, what videogames can do for humanities research, and whether exploring these games can help us to rethink disciplinary constructs, frameworks, or ways of working. The CFP can be viewed here, on the OLHJ website. And you can find a short Twitter thread with more detail here. Abstracts for contributions of 6-8000 words are invited by May 1st 2024, for submission to gamingandhumanities@gmail.com. Please do feel free to promote to colleagues interested in game studies and the humanities – and we look forward to hopefully hearing from you soon.
Best wishes,
