The Year Abroad Experience

Join BAAS

Many universities with American Studies as a degree option will offer the opportunity to study a semester or year at a partner university in the United States or Canada.

This can come in the form of a ‘sandwich year’, where you spend an additional year at another university and therefore spend four years studying for your degree. Or, it can be a replacement semester or year, where part or all of your second or third year is spent at another university. Look on your chosen university’s American Studies website to find out which model they use. They will also include a list of their partner universities you can apply to study at.

Hear from some of our American Studies alumni to hear about their experiences of their study abroad, and what they enjoyed the most about the opportunity:

Along with opportunities to meet new people, and experience living in a different country during your studies, spending time at a university in the US or Canada can provide the chance to study modules that are not available at undergraduate level in the UK. Studying abroad allows you to immerse yourself in the culture of the country you are focusing on for your degree.

Where could I end up studying?

The map of the US below shows some of the universities that our American Studies alumni have spent semesters or years abroad studying at, along with some of the institutions which UK universities continue to partner with when offering study abroad options for their American Studies degrees.
