Equality and Diversity Statement – Adopted November 2017
BAAS is committed to fostering, cultivating and preserving a culture of diversity and inclusion. We accept diversity and equity in our organisational structures as valuable and consequential.
We welcome the wide range of experiences and viewpoints that all members bring to BAAS. All members BAAS are assured the right of equitable, fair and respectful treatment.
BAAS’s diversity initiatives are applicable—but not limited—to our practices and policies on conference and workshop programming, awards and our organisational governance structures. In all of our activities we aim for an intellectual and organisational environment built on the premise of gender and diversity equity.
In 2017 BAAS conducted a Membership Survey which can be accessed in full here. The survey was designed to investigate four specific issues: the demographic makeup of the American Studies community in the UK; gender inequality and sexual harassment; the health of the discipline; and what BAAS can do to support its members.
We also encourage BAAS members to read and engage with The Royal Historical Society’s reports on race, gender, and LGBT+ inequality in UK Higher Education.
