EUP and BAAS are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Jo Metcalf as the new co-editor of the Critical Insights in American Studies series. Jo is a senior lecturer and co-founder and co-director of the Cultures of Incarceration Centre at the University of Hull. Her research focuses on representations of gangs and prisons in a range of cultural forms, and her most recent book is an edited collection of the works of Luis J. Rodriguez. She will bring considerable editorial experience and an infectious enthusiasm to the role, not to mention exciting ideas for the future of the series. Everybody associated with the CIAS series is very much looking forward to working with her.
Jo’s appointment also marks a sad moment in the history of the CIAS series. Jo replaces the outgoing series editor Martin Halliwell, who has worked wonders in transforming CIAS from its previous guise as BAAS Paperbacks, offering a brilliantly perceptive, supportive, and thoughtful editorial hand to over a dozen books, not to mention being a joy to work with, both at professional and personal levels. As important, perhaps, it marks the end of two decades of Martin’s presence at the front lines of BAAS’s operations. Prior to his appointment as series editor, Martin chaired the BAAS Publications Committee, sat on the Executive Committee, and chaired the entire organisation itself between 2010 and 2013. It is no exaggeration to state that Martin has had a huge impact on American Studies in Britain during the twenty-first century, and it was our honour to work alongside him on the CIAS series. We hope that you will join us in saying a big thank you to Martin for his service to BAAS and EUP, and in looking forward to seeing him at future BAAS conferences.
