American Nineteenth Century History – BOOK REVIEW EDITOR(S) SOUGHT

American Nineteenth Century History, the official journal of British American Nineteenth Century Historians (BrANCH), published three times a year by Taylor & Francis, seeks replacements for its current book review editors, David Cox (University of Southampton) and Dawn Wiley (University of Alabama). We would ideally like to appoint two editors, one based in the US and the other in the UK. Please apply EITHER as an individual OR as a duo.

The editors will be responsible for selecting books to review for each issue (normally around a dozen titles per issue), locating appropriate reviewers, and editing submitted reviews and preparing them for publication in collaboration with Taylor & Francis’ production team. Taylor & Francis offers the editor(s) a small honorarium (approximately $975 per year between two editors, or $1950 for one).

As our current book review editors will complete their terms by the end of 2025, and it would be ideal for them to have some overlap with the new editor(s), we would like the new entrant(s) to be in place by 1 November 2025. The post will be for three years, with a possibility of a longer term if desired, and if agreeable to the editors and the leadership of BrANCH.

If you have any questions about this post, please contact the journal’s point of contact for the post, Jonathan Daniel Wells (jonwells@umich.edu).

Applications will be reviewed by the full editorial team, consisting of Margot Minardi (Reed College), David Doddington (Cardiff University), and the existing book review editors, David Cox and Dawn Wiley.

Applications will close on 28 July 2025, and will consist of:

  1. an updated curriculum vitae

A cover letter (2pg maximum) describing your interest in the post and relevant experience, with specific mention of:

how you might maintain and increase the quality and quantity of book reviews

how you would work with the reviews’ authors;

a statement noting any level of support that your institution can provide you (specifically the cost of posting books to reviewers).

Please send these materials to Jonathan Daniel Wells (jonwells@umich.edu) by 28 July 2025. Please feel free to send any queries to the same address.
