3-year PostDoc Position: American Visual History "Documentary Drawing in the 20th Century"

About us:

Funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the research project “Documentary Drawing in the 20th Century” is based at the LMU Amerika-Institut. The interdisciplinary working environment brings together scholars from history, literature and cultural studies, as well as related disciplines, and enables a productive and fruitful exchange. In addition to a wide spectrum of historical and cultural studies expertise and an international network, there is a particular research focus on visual culture, which the new project will build on.

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • You will run the part of the project researching the history of documentary drawing/graphic recording in war
  • You will contribute to the theoretical and conceptual work done within the framework on the project, for example, by participating in and/or organizing workshops
  • You will be the co-curator for the exhibition developed within the framework of the project, planned for 2027; Teaching selected seminars within the American Studies Program is encouraged
  • Active presence in the public facing side of the project is welcomed.

Your qualifications:

  • PhD in Art History, History or a related field
  • A deep interest and expertise in visual culture studies (esp. drawing) and the theory of documentary practices; Knowledge of US twentieth century history a plus
  • Experience in planning and conducting research, including archival work and organizing academic events; previous experience in curation is a bonus
  • Aptitude for digital research infrastructures (e.g. Omeka, RDMO tools, easydb)
  • Enthusiastic and committed, a good communicator and willing to show initiative.
