The Department of English at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in American Literature from Beginnings until 1865 at the rank of Assistant Professor, pending final administrative and budgetary approval. The position will start on August 1, 2025. A PhD in English, Comparative Literature, or closely related field, and evidence of successful teaching are required. ABD candidates will be considered, but must have completed their degree by the date of hire.
The successful candidate will have experience teaching American Literature courses, and we welcome a wide range of secondary interests, such as transatlantic studies, world literature, digital humanities, and ecocritical studies. We seek a faculty member committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, with the ability to teach introductory as well as major-specific and graduate courses. Candidates must have pedagogies that support students of all backgrounds.

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position. Teaching load is 3/3, provided faculty produce at least 2 peer-reviewed publications (or equivalent) every 3 years. Service expectations include advising students, participating in committee work, and other related service activities.
