This paper will analyse the way Ava DuVernay’s Selma reactivates debates on film and history, and provides new avenues to discuss the representation of black iconic figures in film. Hélène Charlery is an Associate Professor at the University of Toulouse 2 Jean Jaurès. Her scholarship focuses on representations of gender and race identities in contemporary American films and television series, with an emphasis on intersectionality and black feminist film theory.
